BEMM129: 5 Things I've Learnt

5 Things I've Learnt in BEMM129

The world is changing every day and has always been; however, thanks to the internet, the rate at which it is changing has increased dramatically. This blog post will document 5 things I've learnt in the 10 weeks of taking this module.

Not all classes need to be held in a lecture theatre I was not familiar with online modules previous to this one. Although I enjoyed the freedom of managing my own time and schedule, the fact that there were no set times for lectures was something I needed to get used to. I found it quite easy for the online lectures to take a back seat, especially during deadline times. However, in the real world, managing my time in order to complete all of my tasks will be my responsibility. The time management skills I have acquired in this course will serve me well in the future.

A traditional CV won't cut it, you need a personal brand. You've done well at school and university, gotten good grades and been and all around good student, well...that's no longer enough! More people are attending university than ever before (UCAS, 2018), meaning higher competition and increasing the need to "stand out".  With HR departments now using algorithms to screen all of their applicant, it is more important now than ever before to "create a personal brand". This means having a LinkedIn account, the perfect private social media accounts showing that you are social but not "too social" and finally, have three previous relevant internships...BEMM129 helped me understand what is considered a professional online profile and made me think about what employers EXPECT.

Discussion improves the learning experience. Throughout the course I have made comments on other students work as well as the lecture content. This made me think about their blogs and subject matter more critically. As blogs are more personal than academic essays, it was enjoyable and interesting to learn other people's perspectives, and it was great to be able to interact with students I may not have otherwise. I found that commenting on other people's work and having them comment on my work created discussion and provoked thought, by making me consider aspects I had not previously considered. Answering comments on my own blog enabled discussion and encouraged me to further look into the subject matter about which I was writing.
